John Hogan's parents were Irish Catholic immigrants who arrived in the colony of Victoria soon after the gold rush. The family settled in Melbourne, where the children were brought up. John became a brick-layer and later a building foreman.
In 1891 he married Emma Thomas. They had no children, and in her later life Emma walked with the assistance crutches, which may have been the result of contracting polio.
They spent their twilight years in the private nursing home 'Karella', in Sussex St, Middle Brighton, cared for by their neice Nell Lipscombe, who was the matron and proprietor of the nursing home. They had a room which over-looked a flowering peach tree.
John is remembered as a fervent Catholic by his great-nephew's wife Ann Lipscombe, who spent 5 months at Karella recovering from rheumatic fever after the birth of her first child. She often saw him going to prayer after tea. His wife Emma was a very nice person and would spend time talking to Ann.
