Sarah was keeping company with one of the soldiers that frequented her father's pub, and in 1826, she found herself pregnant to one of them by the name of Will Monks. But for some reason, he refused to marry her, and young John Dean who had always been a bit soft on Sarah agreed to marry her instead. But the baby arrived first, and was always known as Robert Monks-Dean. Both Sarah and John were only sixteen at the time.
After the baby's baptism, there is no mention of Robert until 1894, then only as "eldest child of John Dean", not as Robert [Obituary in Melbourne newspaper for John Dean].
Sarah, in whatever standard of residence the Deans had acquired, and with such equipment, clothing and food as they could obtain, cared for Robert (Monks) born 1825 and for Sarah Ann, Elizabeth, William J(ames), Mary Ann and John and the newest baby Martha born 28 Apr 1836. Surely she would have had some help with the little ones and the the work of the Inn, just as John would have employed a Yardman. Her own sister Mary Snowden had lived with the family from 1826.
In 1847 their son William James had his name withdrawn from his grandfather's will - William Dean Snr added a codicil to his will withdrawing a bequest "for his bad behaviour".
Between 1827 and 1849 Sarah and John produced 13 children - only two dying during infancy.
