Agnes was one of ten children of John Lipscombe and Emma nee Stroud. The first 5 children, including Agnes, were born around Portsmouth on the south coast of England. She contracted polio as a child and the disease left her partially paralysed on her left side. She walked with a bad limp for the rest of her life and could not extend her arm, though she could grasp things in her left hand and knitted beautifully.
Her father had a position working for the government and was granted land in Invercargill, New Zealand. The family emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s when Agnes was a child, where 4 more of her brothers were born. In the late 1880s her parents decided to move to Australia, leaving behind 3 of their children who had settled in New Zealand. Agnes accompanied her parents, first to Adelaide, and soon after to Melbourne, where the family settled in Canning St, Carlton. Agnes never married and lived with her parents, her father John dying in 1911 and her mother in 1928. She continued living in Carlton until she died.
